Nacton Meadows is a 4.5-hectare (11.1 acres) Local Wildlife Site and biological Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), north-west of Levington, in Suffolk.[1] It is also in the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB).[2]
Nacton Meadows is important for its areas of fen-meadow, of a type uncommon in Suffolk. The site occupies the south-west facing slope of a small tributary valley of the Orwell Estuary, and is about 10 metres (33 ft) above sea level.
The upper slopes have free-draining sandy soils, whereas conditions are wetter along the valley sides and bottom, supporting a wider variety of vegetation, including Yorkshire-fog Holcus lanatus, Crested Dog’s-tail Cynosurus cristatus and Greater Bird’s-foot-trefoil Lotus uliginosus.[1]
