Prestolee Aqueduct is a Grade II listedStructure of particular architectural and/or historic interest deserving of special protection. stone-built aqueduct in Prestolee, Kearsley in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton, Greater Manchester. The brick-lined four-arch structure was constructed in the 1790s to carry the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal across the River Irwell, and is topped with a brick parapet.[1]
The aqueduct is one of two remaining major structures on the canal, the other being the Clifton AqueductGrade II listed aqueduct in Clifton, Greater Manchester, crossing the River Irwell on the Manchester, Bolton and Bury Canal.; a third major aqueduct, Damside Aqueduct, was demolished in the 1950s. Although the aqueduct still carries water it is not navigable, as adjoining sections of the canal are in need of restoration.[2] In particular, the nearby Prestolee Locks have been “derelict for decades”.[3]
