Sandridge Park, near Stoke Gabriel, Devon, is a country house designed by John Nash, overlooking the River Dart. Built in 1805 for Lady Ashburton, it is considered to be an important early example of Nash’s Italianate style, and is a Grade II* listed buildingStructure of particular architectural and/or historic interest deserving of special protection..[1]

By 1822 the property was being let, and by 1850 it is recorded as being unoccupied.[2] By the 1930s it was again unoccupied, and the south front, facing the river, had collapsed. In 1937 the estate was split up and sold, except for the house, for which there were no interested buyers. The house was eventually bought by Mark and Rosemary Yallop in 2006, and has since been extensively restored.[3]

Architecture


The house is built of stuccoed stone rubble, and has a low pitched slate hipped roof and wide eaves. It is in two storeys except for the east and west towers, which have two storeys plus attics. The west tower is an upward extension of the rounded bay at that end of the house, and has three oeil-de-beoufRound window in a wall, or an opening in the top of a dome. attic windows. There is a service wing to the northeast, built round a courtyard at the rear of the house.[1][2]
