Eye is a mezzotint by the Dutch artist M. C. Escher (1898–1972), first published in 1946. The image is of the artist’s own eye, enlarged in a concave shaving mirror.[1]
But the reflection in the pupil is not that of Escher, it is instead the image of Death. Shortly after creating the mezzotint, Escher wrote that:[2]
As the viewer always sees himself in the eye he is looking into, I decided to show a skull reflected in it … Because we are all forced to look at Death, whether we like it or not. Or He looks at us.
