Picture Book

Picture Book is a BBC children’s TV series created by Freda Lingstrom, broadcast from 1955 to 1963; it was the Monday programme in the Watch with Mother cycle.[1] The programme was presented by Patricia Driscoll until 1957, when she left to play the part of Maid Marion in the ITV series The Adventures of Robin Hood, after which Vera McKechnie took over presentation duties.[2]

In each episode, pages of the Picture Book were turned to reveal various items such as how to make a paper lantern, the adventures of Bizzy Lizzy – a wispy-haired little girl with a magic wishing flower on her dress – or the Jolly Jack Tars, a group of puppets who sailed to places like Bottle Island. The 1963 series featured Sossidge, a marionette dachshund voiced by Roy Skelton.[1]
