St Martins is an active Anglican church in the village of Stoney Middleton, in the Derbyshire Dales. It is in the archdeaconry of Derbyshire Peaks and Dales, the deanery of Peak, and the diocese of Derby.[1]

The original 15th-century building was commissioned by Joan Eyre in thanksgiving for the safe return of her husband from the Battle of Agincourt (1415). After being seriously damaged by fire in 1759, the main body of the church was rebuilt to the design of the architect James Paine, incorporating an unusual octagonal naveCentral part of a church, used by the laiety., one of only two in Britain.[2] It was partially restored again in 1861, and the north vestry was added in 1880.[3]

The church was designated a Grade II* listed buildingStructure of particular architectural and/or historic interest deserving of special protection. in 1967.[3]

Organ


An organ from Cousans Sons & Co of Lincoln was installed in1903,[4] at a cost of £130.[2] By 2018 it had been replaced by an electronic organ.[4]
