The AEO 1010 was the successor to the Metrovick 950Early transistorised computer built by Metropolitan-Vickers, first operational in 1956., one of the earliest commercially available transistorised computers. Three were sold to the National Coal Board in the late 1950s, mainly to be used for payroll. The Air Ministry also purchased one to implement a global stock control system for the Royal Air Force.[1]

AEI decided in 1965 to concentrate on the industrial process control market, and to close down all of its data processing activities. All deployed AEI systems were taken out of service soon after GEC’s takeover of AEI in 1967.[1]
