Stanhope hearse house in County Durham
Historic England

Hearse houses, also known as parish stables, were built to house the horse-drawn carriages used to carry the deceased to their funerals.[1]

Once a common sight throughout Britain, they became redundant with the introduction of motorised hearses. Most subsequently fell into disrepair and were removed, or were appropriated to other uses,[2] such as an electricity sub-stationFormer hearse house converted into an electricity sub-station..[3]
