Destiny is an oil painting in the Pre-RaphaeliteGroup of English artists formed in 1848 to counter what they saw as the corrupting influence of the late-Renaissance painter Raphael. style by John William WaterhouseEnglish artist known primarily for his depictions of women set in scenes from myth, legend or poetry. He is the best known of that group of artists who from the 1880s revived the literary themes favoured by the Pre-Raphaelites. (1849–1917), painted in 1900.[1] As in many other of his later works, the picture contains only a single figure, almost invariably female.[2]

Destiny was Waterhouse’s contribution to the Artists’ War Fund, in support of British troops engaged in the Boer War, which had begun the previous year. In all, 350 artists donated works. After being exhibited in the London Guildhall, all the pictures were auctioned by Christie’s and the proceeds donated to the fund.[3]

The girl is drinking a libation to the departing heroes, as she gazes at the ships under sail through the window behind her.[3]

The painting was purchased in 1905 by Burnley Corporation, and is now in the collection of the Towneley Hall Art Gallery & Museum in Burnley, Lancashire.[1]
