The Orphan is an 1834 genre paintingPaintings that depict scenes of ordinary people going about their everyday lives. by the Scottish artist William Allan, a lament for the loss of his friend and supporter the novelist and historian Sir Walter Scott (1771–1832).[1] It depicts the dining room of Scott’s home, Abbotsford, in southern Scotland. Scott’s daughter Anne leans mournfully against her father’s empty carved oak chair.[2]

The painting was exhibited at the Royal Academy’s Summer Exhibition of 1834, and was probably acquired by William IV or his wife Queen Adelaide soon afterwards. It remains in the Royal Collection today.[1]
