The Bouquet is an oil painting in the Pre-RaphaeliteGroup of English artists formed in 1848 to counter what they saw as the corrupting influence of the late-Renaissance painter Raphael. style by John William WaterhouseEnglish artist known primarily for his depictions of women set in scenes from myth, legend or poetry. He is the best known of that group of artists who from the 1880s revived the literary themes favoured by the Pre-Raphaelites. (1849–1917), created in about 1908.[1]

Waterhouse associated women with the beauty and decay of flowers, as both are vessels for the seeds of new growth. Between 1908 and 1914 this idea was a recurring theme in his series of “flower women”, which along with The Bouquet included Gather Ye Rosebuds while Ye May and The Soul of the Rose.[2]

The painting is currently in the collection of the Falmouth Art Gallery, to which it was donated by Alfred de Pass.[2]
