Solar (room)

The solar was a room in many medieval manor houses, designed as the family’s private quarters. It was often built adjacent to an open hall or other room, above service rooms or ground-floor chambers, or the uppermost room in a tower.^[1]

The term derives from the French seul, meaning alone.^[2]
