An oculus is a round window in a wall, or an opening in the top of a dome;[1] the name is borrowed from the Latin word for eye. Such windows are alternatively known by the French term oeil-de-boeuf, meaning “bull’s eye”.[2]

The term oculus is also used to describe a decorative motif found on ancient pottery and in rock art, comprising a pair of circles or spirals resembling a pair of eyes.[2]
