In England and Wales, a foundation school is a state-funded school managed by a board of governers, which employs the school’s teaching staff and is responsible for its admissions policy. Funding is provided by the Local Education Authority, which also pays for any building work. Foundation schools were set up under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to replace grant-maintained schools, which were funded directly by central government.[1][2][3]
A foundation school’s land and buildings are owned either by the governing body or a charitable foundation; in the latter case the school is known as a trust school.[2]
