Ruins of Dryburgh Abbey

Fatlips is the name given to a spirit said to inhabit the ruins of Dryburgh Abbey in Berwickshire, Scotland. The abbey was destroyed by the English during the Jacobite Revolt of 1745, and some time later a homeless woman moved into a vault beneath the ruins.[1]

The woman’s lover was said to have been killed during the conflict, and vowing that she would never again look upon the Sun, she ventured out only at night to obtain “such necessaries, as she could be prevailed upon to accept”. She claimed that during her absence, her dark vault was tidied by a spirit she called Fatlips, whom she described as a little man wearing heavy iron boots, with which he trampled the clay floor to dispel the damp.[2]
