The Laboratory is an oil painting by the English artist John Collier (1850–1934), created in 1895, when it was exhibited at the New Gallery in London’s Spring Exhibition.[1]

The painting depicts a young woman acquiring a poison from an alchemist, which she intends to use to kill her rival in love.[1] The inspiration is Robert Browning’s 1884 poem of the same name, which centres on the true story of the French aristocrat Marie-Madeleine d’Aubray, executed in 1676 for poisoning her father and two brothers, and attempting to murder her husband.[2]

The Laboratory was acquired by the Arts of Imagination Foundation in 2023.[1]
