Barton Aqueduct Pocket ParkSmall area of green space within an urban environment, accessible and open to the general public. occupies a small plot of land off Barton Road, next to the Barton Swing AqueductFirst and only swing aqueduct in the world, carrying the Bridgewater Canal across the Manchester Ship Canal, opened in 1894. in Barton upon Irwell, Greater Manchester. As well as being home to variety of wildlife, it contains the remains of the embankment for James Brindley’s stone aqueductDesigned by James Brindley and opened in 1761, carrying the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell at Barton-upon-Irwell. built in 1761 to carry the Bridgewater Canal over the River Irwell; the remains were designated a Scheduled Monument in 2021.[1][2]

The park is open for pedestrian access only, 24 hours a day.[1] It is sometimes referred to as the Lower Pocket Park; the higher-level Upper Pocket Park, the former site of the canal itself, is inaccessible to the public, having been closed owing to “anti-social behaviour”.[3]
