Penwhirn Reservoir in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland, was built in the 1950s to provide water to the Stranraer area. The 72.2-hectare (178.4 acres) reservoir is three miles (5 km) east of Cairnryan and 7 miles (11 km) northeast of Stranraer, occupying a site between Diddles Hill and Mark Hill; it is operated by Scottish Water.[1]
The height of the dam was raised by 1.5 metres (4.9 ft) in 2015, at a cost of £8 million, increasing the reservoir’s capacity by about 40 per cent.[2] The associated Penwhirn Water Treatment Works, about a quarter of a mile (0.4 km) to the east, has the capacity to treat up to 17.2 million litres per day.[3]
The reservoir also supports a recreational fishery for brown trout.[1]
