About us

We are experienced former Wikipedia editors who have written hundreds of Good and Featured articles, and created this site in the belief that the wiki model of collaboration was a success in quickly starting an online encyclopedia, but is not a sustainable model for maintaining one. Although our primary focus is UK related, you will find articles on the tragedy of the Donner PartyGroup of American pioneers who set out for California in a wagon train. Delayed by a series of mishaps, they spent the winter of 1846–1847 snowbound in the Sierra Nevada, where some of them resorted to cannibalism to survive., the paintings of Antoine WiertzBelgian Romantic painter and sculptor. His output, featuring such macabre scenes as violent suicide and premature burial has persuaded some critics to consider it the work of a madman., or the German witch Margaretha HornWoman arrested on suspicion of witchcraft in Rothenburg in 1652, who despite being tortured, vigorously protested her innocence., as some topics transcend geographic boundaries. What you will not find are articles on Japanese railway stations, abandoned villages in Vietnam or US baseball players; we leave that to Wikipedia.

Our focus is on the weird, the unexplained, perception and gullibility, witchcraft and magic, Victorian curiosities and local history. About ten per cent of our content has no equivalent on Wikipedia, and the rest, much of which we wrote ourselves while on Wikipedia, has been improved in terms of accuracy, sourcing and general readability.

We do not, and never will, publish articles on the biographies of living persons. So you won’t find an article on Nigella Lawson if you’re searching for a list of “english cooks”, but you will find articles on Elizabeth Raffald18th-century English entrepreneur, author of The Experienced English Housekeeper, and possible inventor of the Eccles cake., Martha Bradley18th-century English cook, author of The British Housewife. and Mary Eales18th-century writer on cookery and confectionery, author of Mrs Mary Eales's Receipts (1718). But that doesn’t mean we ignore current events, such as a new episode of the BBC series Ghost Stories at ChristmasHorror story by the English novelist and historian E. F. Benson, first published in 1912., or the recently announced restoration of Rock HallGrade II country house in Moses Gate Country Park in Farnworth, built in about 1807 for John Crompton. in Farnworth.

We prioritise truth over the agreement of often uninformed anonymous wiki editors. Our aim is to provide reliable information fully supported by good quality references to source material, providing a starting point for further research. And to that end we use a consistent, centralised citation system and conform to the MLA standard whenever feasible,[a]MLA is designed with published written sources in mind, so we use MLA formatting for such citations, and MLA‑compatible fallback formatting for web sources, which very rarely have page numbers or date of publication, which MLA requires. and continuously monitor for link rot, so any broken links can be quickly updated. By comparison, about 54 per cent of English Wikipedia articles contain at least one broken external link in their references section,[1] and as at October 2026 there are more than half a million articles containing challenged, uncited statements.[2]

Our guiding principles are that every article should maintain a neutral tone, support facts with reliable sources, and favour secondary sources over primary sources. We have generally adopted the Wikipedia Manual of Style, but with some minor differences to maintain consistency across every article. For instance, all dates are given in the DMY style common in most English-speaking countries except the USA.
